Das Jahr des Feuers - Part XXXVII

Die Reise nach Warunk

14.10.2010

Na? Na? Niemand? Mist.

The Old Republic

Having played the most of the past month now, I feel qualified to say a few things about this game. Let´s categorize:

Say, you want to play TOR. USplayers pay 15$, Europeans mostly 13€ per month. The account is created fast and dirty, you can download the client afterwards directly. So, you go to sleep hoping that the 19gb are downloaded the next morning. They won´t, but then, you like to sleep in, so during midday the download finishes. You jump in, choose a server you know your friends are playing, choose a class and after an hour are happy with the body and face you finally decide on. The first 10 levels could have been a KOTOR-Game, you level up doing missions, you gain your first companion and choose an advanced class after finishing the tutorial planet. The dialogue is good, if a bit on the cliche side, but then again, you are playing a modern Bioware game. Up until that point, you could play completely alone.

PvE-Content
Entering the advanced class at lvl 10, you enter into the basic content. Quests are given in dialogue form with several ways to answer as well as the possiblity to refuse some quests during the dialogue. You are given "light side/darkside"-choices and what you say affects what the companion you have decided to take with you thinks of you. You gain or lose affection. Quests mostly lead trough all the greater places of a planet and follow the overall story of the planet you are on. PvE content goes till the maxlevel and then you can go raiding for the greater story actions. However, while the game uses much instanced events and the dialogues, the planets themselves are not really instanced. You do not see your progress except during the class missions which are instanced in themselves. Basically, once you have one character who´s done all the missions on his way to 50 and always went on flashpoints(dungeons) and operations(raids) will have little replayability beyond the other classes special missions. Depending on how much you play, with about 4h a day you would take about a month if you concentrate on playing with a dedicated group. After that, nothing in there for the PvE-player. But till you get there, by the gods, some of those stories are really good.

PvP-Content
You have 3 battlefields, several open-world-pvp-zones and the world-pvp on Illum. Doesn´t sound much, and it really isn´t. 2 of the 3 battlefields are bascially goal-oriented pvp-zones, one is point defense, the other a different sort of Alterac Valley. The last ist Huttball, a futuristic kind of ball game which is playable against your own faction, instead of the other faction. You cannot choose the battlefield, you get what is available. Therefore, you will play much huttball. More so, of you are on the imperial side.

Technical
Well, the game looks good, the HERO-Engine does it´s job there, but that´s not all it was supposed to. Basically, it run´s shoddy. Many people have differing framerates, the game can at times be instable, many things seem incompatible and several graphic options are not even integrated at times of Patch.1.1 What´s saddest, we see even great systems working abysmally bad. They really have their work cut out for them here.

We´ll have to see, for now, many features are not even included, and there´s soooo much I´ve not yet talked about. However, if you liked KOTOR and Mass Effect, you will mostly like TOR. I, for myself will stay on till march, just to see wether the legacy system is worth it and to see how many characters story I will have finished till then.

So far, so good.

DnD 5ED

So, as I just read, a fifth edition of the mother of all Pen&Paper games is in the works. What this brings for us, remains to be seen. The fact, that the designers want to listen to the community is a two-edged sword. First and foremost, they seem to forget, that the community consists of fans.

And fans, as we should all be aware, produce first and most a lot of air. Secondly, most of them don´t want great changes or want changes they personally deem correct but that do not necessarily add to the game as a whole, so that the complete game suffers.

On the other side, asking the people playing it, means getting a game those people will want to buy. However, this may mean less changes and thus ...it´s a spiral of demise. Frankly, don´t listen too closely to the fans.

2011

Quite a year, eh?

Many deaths all year around and we are slowly losing the older generation as was supposed to happen. Still, we aren´t as far ahead in biotechnology-research as I would like it to be. Still no partial immortality possible, which really disappoints me. I mean, I do not care for jetpacks and flying cars, but hell, I care for getting cybernetic implants!

Merry Christmas!

Because I am currently involved in other affairs only so much today.

To everyone of you, Merry Christmas. To those of you on the more anglo-saxon side, just try to think I wish this to you one day later. So, cherioo.

Argh.

Smoke

So, today I saw SMOKE, a movie adapted from a story by Paul Auster. I like Paul Auster, he writes good stories and I consider his City of Glass to be of highest quality among many. But SMOKE is not like these. I´ve come to build a certain expectation from Auster-stories. Absurdity, Life and the questions surrounding it, Conflicts between Man and Nature etc. These are well, in part missing in the movie. To say there is a plot would be stretching it.

The movie revolves around Auggie Wren, a 50something played by Harvey Keitel. Only, it really doesn´t. What it does, is revolve around Auggie and the people around him as he works in and for the Brooklyn Cigar Co. It´s summer of 1990 and in episodic tales we meet people and see a part of their life. How it currently goes. Many questions in this movie go unanswered and we never get to see many solutions, but to hope for these goes besides what the movie actually has to offer.

SMOKE was interesting to see, because it has this feeling of authenticity I am missing in many movies nowadays. You know, this feeling, like this could really happen. It feels human in that way. Unfortunately, there is much more to it, than I could fathom in one viewing, but I will restrict myself to that one and I advise others to do the same. The movie might be viewed on deeper levels, but at the same time leaves the viewer unsatisfied and further viewings won´t solve that. Not to mention, that I believe a certain level of pretentiousness to be in there, that is, within the movie. If anything, watch the ending. Auggies christmas story is worth a watch and the ending credits support that wholly.

If I were to give a single worded opinion, I´d say it is Ok.

The human animal?

Can it be so wrong to believe man still to be an animal? Man, at times, can be animalistic. But to be animalistic, means also, that there are times when he is not. An animal is at all times such, but man seems not to be. Because of his quality of self-reflection? Is man really beyond these base urge? Or is it but a mask he wears for others?

Not to mix words, nor to mix different groups of thoughts. How much is changed by our perception and how much by our ..this is not important for the moment. Does man transcend the status of animal yet, that is the question. Is man an animal, so he must be taught and held as one. For if he is not, if he truly transcends this notion of being, then he must have become something different altogether. I wonder, where then did I err?

Wie üblich also.

Ansonsten hab ich die Tage "Children who chase lost voices from deep below" gesehen.

Movicember

So, I had the chance to see some interesting, some bad, some good movies. Let´s see.

We begin with LOVE. It´s an interesting movie, basically a sci-fi flick and a cast of only a few. But it´s also a metaphysical journey trough time and man itself. What loneliness does to us and means to all mankind. While psycadelic enough to be made in the 60s, I was reminded of HAL and a few select Hitchcocks, though the latter more in tone than in view, it still goes on to carry it´s basic message. So yeah, I liked it, but I do advise you to beware, it´s not for everyone.

Next up was the SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO. A sorta b-movie real-actor adaption of an older anime from 1974. Let´s be honest here, b-movie does not cut it. Stretched beyond all belief, padded into extinction, a friend of mine said while watching it, this movie not only goes trough all pathos but also doesn´t seem able to ever break out of its cliches. I mean, I know you have a basis from which to work from and there are concession to be made to the old crowd of fanst, but even in revising this stuff, I could see plot twists and ideas from a mile ago. And very often the movie has plot holes I could get a battleship trough with. Several times. The effects are ok at best, but definitely cheaper looking than they have any right to. It´s just sad, after watching I just know, this could have been so much better. Too bad then, it wasn´t.

So, we come to COWBOYS & ALIENS. Ford, Craig and Wilde play contemporary individuals during the late 19th century. 1873, if wikipedia was to be believed, the movie only ever indicated playing after the civil war. Anyway, I only had the chance to see the extended cut and while it was by no means bad, it also was a very boring movie at times. The premise seems to look for so much more. I mean, the landscapes fascinated me more, than anything the movies plot ever delivered. But Olivia Wilde was nice to look at. Too bad that scene didn´t last any longer. Still, it´s passable. It´s not really better than YAMATO above, but it has the better cast and the greater budget to speak for it. It´d give it a passable grade, if only because it has a certain kind of campy charm to it. Sorta like a really expensive trash movie. You know, this could have been awesome if made by Troma Studios.

Next up is FRIGHT NIGHT. A remake of an older movie from, I think the 70s or at latest the early 80s, this was one helluva good movie. You can just see Colin Farrell relishing the opportunity to play a badass vampire. Not a fairy like in Twilight but one intelligent, evil, predator. Awesome, and you should definitely watch this, if only to see Dr.Who get on as a fantastic bastard actor. It´s in fact quite intelligent. And if you ask me, but then who does these days..., anyway, after seeing this movie I am convinced that Christopher Mintze-Plasse is either immortal or stopped aging somewhere at 18 or 19. Given a few centimeters for growing up, McLoving looks almost EXACTLY the same. And once again a great opportunity for fun and game.

Last in todays entry is the newest Gosling movie DRIVE. This movie has a meta-level of it´s own, but that has to come later. Ryan Gosling plays an empty man. A stunt driver and mechanic at day and criminal getaway driver at night, his life changes once a woman comes into it. Granted, this time its a woman and child, but you know the drill. The thing about this movie, for me, was the way it was shot, the story was told and the music accompanying it. Great piece, too bad Christina Hendricks didn´t have more screentime (*RAWR*) bad good all the way trough. Definietly go see this, though I fear the movie might alienate some.

Das Problem moderner Finanzpolitik

Geh weg, das will doch eh keiner lesen.

So.

Andere wiederum schreien hier gleich "Systemfrage! Systemfrage!".

Star Wars The Old Republic

So, another day, another game. Bioware has risen to the challenge of releasing the next great star wars game, following their success with the game series Knights of the Old Republic I and II, they´ve decided to go for an MMO this time. While I only had the chance to play a bit during the weekend beta, my impressions so far are quite interesting. In a word, it´s good. Seriously good. But then again, it is also still an MMO. Will have to see till December, how it will fare, once out of BETA.

Über 300 Jahre her, seitdem nix neues.

20111121

L.A. Noire

So, the newest Rockstar crime solving simulation. Or not, as you will drive like crazy, shoot gangsters and question witnesses about questionable circumstances and accusing them of lying, even if you have no idea, because you know, why not, it works.

Still, let us work in the format, first the good, as last time:
  1. Facial animations are awesome. You can almost always tell the actor behind the face and it really really looks the case. Great!
  2. The cases are interesting and diverse. Very often you find yourself between thinking really hard about wether or not the one you call into question is really the criminal and about the circumstances.
  3. The City of Angels feels fucking alive, all this stuff happening outside, like world living.
  4. Each episode feels like I´m watching good ol´Perry Mason, only without Perry and the judge etc. Still, I like it.
  5. Music is nice, dialogue is interesting, the way the game ranks your score is apt to tell how good you are.
But of course, behind everything else, there is also the bad.
  1. While the faces look good, the rest of the game does not so much. GTA 4 looked much better, all the while being 3 years older.
  2. The cases are convoluted. Very. Several times I was wondering in the latter cases, who was doing what and why.
  3. Several of the logic puzzles in interrogating witnesses and accused are ... moon logic. Several times I have known thank to "Guide Dang it" that witnesses lied due to proof lying around somewhere while being obscure also having no connection to anything whatsoever. Which is really stupid, because those things you want to ask about or need to think for logical conclusions can´t be reached, meaning you will miss several cases or screw them up because.
  4. The difficulty is all over the place. Due to the DLC cases being inserted into the game, the difficulty jumps like hell. Going from an easy traffic case to the question of the argentinian ambassador car is like giving an analphabet a book telling him "You can do this!"
  5. Mechanics-wise the game gets old very fast. It´s always going around, looking for clues, talking to witnesses, accusing them of lying, and charging them with something. Duuuullllllllllll...
  6. You can NEVER defy your station commander, not matter how idiotic the supposed reason is about which you wish to speak up.
  7. Cole Phelps has no personality, nor a real arc. You are supposed to learn about him from short flashbacks from the war and his talks with his colleagues. But since you never see Phelps anywhere else than at work and you only guide his instinct, not his character really, he forever is distant from the player. I was suprised as hell when he suddenly spoke about having a wife and some cases later he said something about kids. What the hell. How are we to sympathize with this stuck up bastard if we can´t get to know him?
  8. The car and on-foot controls are bad. Really really bad. On foot Cole is navigating like he walks on a minefield and the cars all drive like a bizzaro porsche.
  9. The 40 sidequests are purely filler. Absolutely pointless it seems, after 3 I could go on no more with them. Been ignoring them ever since.
Still, in conclusion, not unlike Skyrim, I like LA Noire, because it has that typical Rockstar Vibe we all know and love. Also, I´m a sucker for criminal shows, as long as they are not CSI BlaBla.

20111118

Elder Scrolls V - SKYRIM

So...the newest Elder Scrolls Game is out. And as many of you mighthave guessed, I am pretty intrigued.
Lets make  this easy, I am going to list of the good and the bad:

The Good:
  1. Graphics look good and are still playable even on severely old machines
  2. The new leveling system works mightily fine, if abuse is self-prevented
  3. The World feels kind of alive, not yet Ultima VII style, but they are on their way

Now, about the bad:

  1. AI. Maker is it dumb, several times I was able to pick them off with my bow despite standing in plain view
  2. The Interface is atrocious for a pc-game. Simply a no-no Bethesda, big minus
  3. The procedurally generated quest-system is nice in theory, but kind of pointless
  4. The fighting continues to feel hamhanded with the way the game goes about it.
  5. Magic, used correctly, is way overpowered.
  6. Leveling-scale system. Not as bad as Oblivion, but still, I do kind of hate it. I really don´t want to find daedric armour in every other bandit cave, you know.
  7. Crafting system flawed. Many of the crafting choices are too easily obtainable and make the loot acquirable pretty much pointless. Basically it goes like this: Why go questing, when my craft armor is way better?
  8. Once again, merchants are pretty much piss-poor. If you are able to have a house in Solitude (25k gold btw.), then why is your daily gold set at 500 or 750 gold. The player can´t even sell basic loot at that level.

Now, you might think that I am bascially thrashing on this game, but you should already be aware of the fact, that I am very much entranced by it. Basically, even with its flaws, it will keep on being awesome. I know it isn´t GOTY, as this role is clearly cut out for The Witcher 2, but I´ll be damned, if SKYRIM isn´t at least second best.

Oh, and names are untranslatable. I mean, come on guys, the german translation is hilarously bad.
